Jesus is the Well of Salvation

 

     We see in John 4 6-13 What Jesus promises with regard to this matter. We must go to Him for this spring of liivng water welling up to eternal life!    

 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

 11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?

 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,

 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

 

    Rivers of living water flowing from within Jn 7:37-38

   37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

   38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

   39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

 

   We are called to access the living water on behalf of others.

 

 We are called to access this living water from Jesus not only for ourselves but for the whole world which is crying out for it. At the places where Jesus has poured out in the past we redig the well by humbling ourselves as our forefathers did until the water flows from the throne of grace.

 

   Isaiah 41:17 “The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst.  But I the Lord will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

  18 I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.

 

 At Pisgah Evan Roberts and his family and friends did such a thing until the water flowed through Wales in 1904 as many others have done in the past many revivals in Wales through the years.

 

  We seek to open up the rivers of salvations by doing what these previous men of God and praying women did from years ago so that the Lord would pour out a mighty awakening and revival once more.

 

  Lessons from the wells which Isaac reopened and dug in Gen 26:16 - 23

 

16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.”

 

17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled.

18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.

20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him.

21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.

22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it.

He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.

24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”

25 Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.

 

 Redigging the wells of the Fathers.

 

18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

 

 It is interesting to note that the wells they redug had specific names when they were restored. I believe it is possible they were named for the events surrounding them or the quality or property of the well. As we will see later there were wells named bacause of arguments around them over their water.

 In the last few hundred years in Wales and the UK there have been varous various outpourings. We think of the wells of Moriah and Pisgah in Loughor in the Revival of 1904. This seemed to be a salvation well of singing, weeping, and revival of humility amongst young people in particular.

Howell Harris from Trefecca near Talgarth in 1735 was mightily impacted for evangelism and when he began to speak in sick rooms people were healed and saved almost instantly. This happened everywhere he went until he preached to crowds of people in fields because the established religion of the day would not recognise him or his preaching.

He was responsible for an Apostolic transformation into a new fire filled movement called Methodism. This well was characterised by a fiery passion for the lost and to disciple and equip the new converts for service in the Kingdom.

 

 When we begin to re-dig these wells as led by the Holy Spirit then we must have the humility and passion to give everything the Fathers did to be able to release the water from those wells.

 

 When we look at the text in verse 18 we see that the Philistines filled in the wells that the Fathers dug. Spiritually this happens when men operate in all the fleshly lusts and man made power and control. They become proud and are not willing to share the God given water and maybe even commercialise it. This will stop the flow. When we draw water from the Well of Salvation who is Jesus himself we must not allow those fleshly things to get in the way or the water stops, but we must give a drink to all those around trusting that the Lord will give us a sustaining drink too. We must pray for all those around that they may be fully satisfied by Jesus or else the water will stop flowing.

Almost every outpouring and revival in history began in the Spirit and was destroyed and rendered powerless by man's fleshly desires getting in the way.

 

 When men argue over a well in a location or say they own it or chose not to bless others with it it becomes dry. God gave these places names so that people will remember what happened there and why the well stopped flowing.

 

 19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.

20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him.

21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.

 

 Isaac's persistance pays off. Finally they dug another well and no one quarrelled over it and God made them fruitful in the land

 

22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it.

He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

 

 When we come to Pisgah, Moriah, Talgarth, Llangeitho or any other of the Father's wells we must arm ourselves with the right attitude of heart and behaviour. The water will flow and there will be fruit and the enemy cannot get in.

 The Lord then appears to Isaac and promises an increase in the number of descendants, and he dug a new well!

 

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.

24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”

25 Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.

 

   Family inheritance.  We have a right to every prayer and promise through our family lines and also through the family of believers as we are children of Abrahem.  

 

  We have a God given right to walk in those promises, giftings assignments, open heavens because of God's covenant with Araham.

 Isaiah 49:8 This is what the Lord says: “In the time of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances.

  We are assigned to restore the desolate inheritances.

 

  Spiritual wells and old revival sites and areas still have Open Heavens and strong angelic activity!

 

Jesus' baptism

  The bible refers to Heaven opening and the Spirit descending and resting upon Jesus at His baptism and a voice from Heaven saying 'This is my Son with whom I am well pleased.'

 

  Also at Jacob's well.

Jacob fell asleep on the rock and he saw a vision of heaven. At many of these sites aroung Wales these scriptures are written in the churches regularily.

Genesis 28: 10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran.

11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.

12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.

14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.

15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”

 

17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

 Yes these places still exist where heaven has met earth!

 

                                                    Desert Pete - The story

 

  This story depicts the attitude we must have when we come to an old well of revival:-

 

  There was a man who was thirsty and hungry almost dying in the desert searching for water and there was none. He kept going until he looked up and saw on the horizon, a mirage possibly? or was it a real old fashioned well pump?

 

  On arrival at the pump he discovered it was real and noticed that there was a notice there on the pump which read "About a metre down in the sand is a bottle containing water. If you drink it you will surely die, but if you use the deposit to moisten the pump mechanism you will be able to have water for the whole land and you yourself will never run dry!'

 

 Many come to a well to experience a rush, gush or zap, but this will surely fade in a short time, but those who humble themselves and pray will cause the water to flow for all!

 

 So when we come to a spiritual revival well we must put our hands to the pump, turn outward and use the deposit there to water the whole land and bring revival.

 

 Proverbs 11:25 The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.
